Matthew Gumb brings years of deep and varied experience in his counseling work with adults, children, and adolescents. Working to help individuals and families that suffer with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety, anger management, inattentive/impulsive behavior, as well as other issues.

After personally having a transformative experience in going through his own therapy as a young-adult, Matthew felt a strong sense of vocational calling to become a counselor and to work to create an environment that fosters safety and acceptance for others, while also being shaped by the desire to bring greater self-awareness and personal growth to those with whom he works.

Matthew is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Service Provider (LPC-MHSP) in Tennessee, as well as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina. He has worked in settings such as residential treatment, as an intensive in-home therapist, and a mental health counselor and practice training manager for a large psychotherapy group in Charlotte, North Carolina. Matthew relocated with his family to Knoxville from the Charlotte area in the Fall of 2021 to join the clinical team with Haven Counseling Center.

In his work as a therapist, Matthew wants to hold space for people as they work through managing stress, mood regulation, questions in faith, and in discovering new solutions in their lives. In his work as a clinician, Matthew’s primary theoretical approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as Existentialism and Person-Centered. Matthew also has training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) for assisting individuals with OCD.

Growing up in a tightknit Irish-Catholic family in the Lower Hudson Valley in New York, Matthew initially moved to the south as an undergraduate to study music therapy, and then performance, at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. Changing career direction towards the end of his undergraduate experience while completing a minor in psychology, Matthew then completed his Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at Pace University in New York in 2014, before moving back to Charlotte to begin his clinical career.

And as much as Matthew feels called to his work as a therapist, he believes his true vocation is as a husband and father. Mathew’s wife, Danielle, is a care advocate for Reissing Health Family Chiropractic. She loves learning and teaching about the nervous system in every area of her life. As a music therapist, she helps people make connections using music. At home Danielle loves creating an enriching environment for her family both indoors and outdoors! Whether it’s playing outside, taking care of their chickens or hanging out in the sensory playroom…it’s all about making life fun and cultivating safety for her family.
