Micah Riley is a mental health therapist who works as a part of the clinical team of Haven Counseling Center in Knoxville, TN. His experience includes working with adults, adolescents, children (5 y/o+), and couples.

Micah is passionate about coming alongside clients experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship issues, low self-esteem, unwanted pornography habits, and spiritual concerns.

Micah knows taking the step toward therapy can be hard, and he is committed to meeting clients exactly where they are with a posture of acceptance and empathy.

Micah believes that clients are unique and come to therapy with their own stories, strengths, and needs. He tailors his approach to the individual and integrates different approaches as they are helpful, including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, attachment theory, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness. When working with couples, he works from a base in Gottman method couples therapy, and he utilizes child-centered play therapy in his work with children. Micah is passionate about fostering an empathetic and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship, supporting clients’ self-acceptance and growth, and employing clients’ strengths along with evidence-based practices to help clients meet their goals.

Micah earned his B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. He also earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Duke University, where he was awarded the Frederick Buechner Writing Award in 2021. Micah went on for clinical training and completed an M.A. Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is currently completing his post-graduate hours toward licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Provider (LPC-MHSP) under the supervision of Matt Scheuneman, MA, LPC-MHSP-AS. Micah is an enthusiastic proponent of lifelong learning and prioritizes continued education in counseling approaches, interventions, and treatment issues.

After living in North Carolina for five years, Micah returned to Knoxville, his hometown, where he can be found dog-watching with his wife, talking theology with friends, and searching for the perfect chicken biscuit. Micah enjoys absurd humor, specialty coffee, and all things The Lord of the Rings.
